Sometimes amid winter breaks and holiday festivities, kids can become a bit antsy. What’s a Katy parent to do? Here are some things to do at home and nearby to keep the kiddos entertained for hours.

Indoor Campout
Katy mom Tiffany Hale has a small, inexpensive tent that she sets up indoors and fills with blankets and pillows. Her daughters, Alyssa and Allie, play camping with their picnic toy food and stuffed animals. A little nature music in the background makes for a most memorable indoor campout.

Preserving Family Memories
Winter breaks are a great time to capture those holiday photos you’ll treasure forever. Take an opportunity to snap photos of the kids while you and they have time off to do so. The Barton family of Katy enjoys perusing photo albums and scrapbooks together as a way of sharing family stories. Take it one step further by letting kids work on a few scrapbook pages of their own, so they can chronicle their favorite memories.

Splish Splash
The new water fountains at Westgreen Gardens are always fun – and you never know what the weather will be like in Katy – even during winter! Just be sure to bring along dry clothes and money for a cone at Cold Stone, advises Aimee Cantrell, mom to Jordyn and Jakob.

Animal Sightings
During the fall and winter months, the Houston Zoo is surprisingly empty and offers entertainment for kids young and old. With recently redone exhibits and ever changing attractions, this might be the ticket for your family. Visit www.houstonzoo.org for more information.

Back in Time
The George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond is open almost every day of the year and takes you back to the time when settlers first arrived in Texas. Visitors get a hands-on tour of a 19th century cabin and barn, a sharecroppers cabin, and several homes. Don’t forget the chuckwagon and cowboy demonstrations! Their website, www.georgeranch.org, has all the information you will need.

Whether you stay at home or hit the road, you’re sure to find something fun to do. If you have great ideas to break the boredom, please email them to editor@katymagazine.com.
