You're Never Too Old for Family Traditions © Katy Magazine - Katy, Texas 2005

Even though my children are in junior high and high school now, they still enjoy all the old classic Christmas traditions we started when they were babies. In our family, an annual kids photo with Santa is a must that continues
today. I think I caught a glimpse of St. Nick wincing as my linebacker son plopped down on his knee. But, that’s part of the job description, right?
My kids are never too old to dress like elves on tree trimming night, read the Story of Baby Jesus, or leave cookies and milk out for Santa. Carrots are still left on our back porch for Rudolph and both kids eagerly await their
new pajamas after the Candlelight Service on Christmas Eve. And, if I don’t hang the Advent Calendar and fill it with treats on or before December 2, believe me – they notice!
Actually, one of our traditions is to add NEW traditions to our growing list of rituals. Recently, we started having a Family Christmas Pageant. My daughter, a fantastic singer, opened the show with an inspirational Christmas
carol. Then my husband and son brought down the house by playing A Charlie Brown Christmas, together, on their trumpets. Since I don’t play an instrument and I only sing in the shower or car, my son took pity on me and agreed to
do a dance routine with me. What other junior high kid would swing dance with his mom to Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree? We’re not ready for Broadway yet, but nobody got injured and we all had a lot of laughs.
If you’re looking for some fun, unusual traditions to start with your family, browse the list of traditions in this issue. On behalf of Katy Magazine and from our family to yours, we wish you a wonderful Katy Texas Christmas.
Cheers!
