All eyes were skyward as students, teachers, and administrators welcomed the Life Flight helicopter as it touched down on the 50-yard line of Taylor High School’s football field in December. The visit was part of the new pilot EMT
class at Taylor High School taught by licensed paramedic Maria “Sam” Carter, who arranged the special visit.
The Life Flight team from Memorial Hermann Hospital let the students tour the helicopter and examine equipment onboard for treating patients. In the Health Sciences Technology III course, students are taught college-level EMT
material coordinated through the State of Texas EMS Division. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive their EMT certification, enabling them to function as certified EMTs in exas and other states. Students are
trained to handle real life and death situations. “These events make a huge impact on students as well as seasoned medics and teach them to become caring, compassionate caregivers,” explains Carter. The EMT class is the third
phase of the Health Science Technology (HST) courses offered by Katy ISD. According to Katy ISD’s Bonny Green, the HST courses provide a stepping stone for students interested in medical professions. “HST students gain an
extensive knowledge in medical terminology and acquire many basic skills such as taking blood pressure, pulse and CPR certified,” said Green.
District officials are planning to offer the EMT course at Katy High School next year and hope to eventually make it available at all Katy ISD high schools.
